Intuniv For ADHD Children ~ What is Intuniv?

I have had a few parents asking about Intuniv. Either those who already have their child on Intuniv as well as those thinking about starting their child on it for their ADHD. So, I decided to look into and get all the facts as well as the opinions and experiences of parents with children on Intuniv to see how it works, how it affects ADHD, the different side effects etc. to help my readers better understand the medication, it's uses and any possible issues. This latest research I thought would take a day when it actually has taken me a few days to research it all!

What is Intuniv?

There are many children out there that take stimulant medications like Concerta or Adderall for their Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). However, Intuniv is a long active non stimulant prescription medication for children with ADHD like Strattera. For those of you that don't know, a non stimulant is not a controlled substance which means it doesn't  pose the same concerns of dependency or addiction as stimulants can.

Child ADHD's New Forum

Child ADHD has created a Forum for parents, family, friends and anyone else who knows an ADHD child, adult or if you are and ADHD child/adult. It's a great place to interact with other ADHD parents, families and others with ADHD. Using the Child ADHD forum, you can ask questions, tell us your stories, answer questions with your experience, knowledge and opinions. You can even use the forum just to vent, let off steam and let out frustration you are having from all the stressors ADHD can make.

The nice thing I want to let you all know is that the forum doesn't have to be just about ADHD, you can talk about ODD and other coinciding diagnoses, behaviors, bullying, parenting, and so much more.

I have done this to try to expand as well as further give support to parents! I hope you like it, I always love feedback so feel free to give me yours! :)

You can access the Child ADHD forum by clicking the page tab "Child ADHD Forum" at the top of the blog or by going to http://child-adhd-forum.31337.n6.nabble.com/

Children diagnosed with ADHD Study

According to a government report in 2011, 1 in 10 children are diagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). This is an increase from more than tens years ago.

Now, this doesn't necessarily mean mean that there are more ADHD children, it could mean that they are better detecting the disorder and therefore an increase in diagnoses of ADHD,
which is a good thing in my opinion.

ADHD Brain Size

ADHD is one of the most common psychiatric conditions in children. I found studies that children and teens with ADHD have slightly smaller brains (as shown in the picture above) than others without the disorder. This shows us a lot more about ADHD children and teens other than the actual brain size though.

One study was a ten year study from 1991-2001 that was funded by and conducted at The National Institute of Mental Health.

ADHD with ODD

ODD (Oppositional Defiant Disorder) is where a child has a disruptive and oppositional behavior usually directed towards authority figures like parents and teach ODD children are constantly disobedient and defiant and are often hostile. These children will refuse simple requests or chores and don not like to be given instructions or orders. They will at times blame others for their mistakes and can become angered or touchy. Children with ODD tend to engage in intentionally annoying behaviors and argue.

So how's it connected to ADHD?
